Of all the offerings in the H&R line-up, the 30-06 is the most versatile. Since you already have the .243 barrel, we won't cover downloading for varmints. The 30-06 then can be loaded with 150 grain bullets for deer-sized game and loaded up with 180 for bigger game and 220 for the biggest.
I would also suggest a .50 caliber muzzleloading barrel if you wish to extend your whitetail season.

The only thing is, H&R/NEF (Marlin) suggests you return your firearm to them so the barrels can be properly fitted to your receiver.

This is the second time I have seen a posting from Nancy on something "she"? has no knowledge of the topic. With H&R single shots it doesn't make any difference what you were originally chambered for, since there is no bolt face to change. This rifle, just like the T/C Encore and Contender can be rebarreled by simply removing the fore end and swapping barrels (you must remove a pivot pin first in the T/C's).

Personally I would recommend a .270. I hunt with a 270 made by savage with a 3 by 9 Bushnell scope, and 130 grn shells. It's a great rifle that shoots very true with great range for the size of the rifle. If you go very bigger than a 270 i think its overkill, and its gonna be tougher to be as accurate. Of course it kinda depends on what you are hunting because you could go with a 30-30 which is a great brush gun but it lacks the range of say a 270. but could still kill an animal as big as a deer. But in my opinion you cant go wrong with a good ol .270 and a decent scope on top and you should be in there like swim wear.

The H&Rs /NEF are great little rifles , i have a bunch , to get a factory barrel fitted you WILL have to send in the frame for fitting , used barrels can be had from a number of places but a sure fit is not always possable .

As far as what cal. it will depend on what you want to do with it , gen. plunking i'd say the .223 just be advised you should not try shooting Mil. Spec. ammo in it , BAD .

The 45/70 is also a great choice as is the 308 and 30/06 .

If you want to find out more about these rifles Graybeard Outdoors has a web forum just for these great guns .

I’m backing Nancy on the 308 caliber.
With the exception I personally don’t know of any reputable or knowledgeable weapons dealer.
That sell just the H&R barrels.
H&R are not a bad gun, BUT they don’t hold to the same stringent tolerances as other Single shot manufactures of a much higher Quality and price to go with it.
CHECK with you True gun shop or Gun smith, NOT Wal-Mart, I’m under the impression that H&R requires you send in the receiver so as it will be properly matched to THAT receiver.
Bare in Mind we are talking H&R, it is doable but not the most convenient.

NOTE!!! not saying you cant get your hands on one, there are nuts on all levels of this industry, some selling and some buying.

To Forgo Safety is not WISE.

The only way H&R can be compared to TC is the are both Fire arms and single shots.
Other then that they are at two totally different ends of the spectrum.

It depends on what you want to hunt. I use the .243 for whitetail deer, bobcat, coyote and other furbearers in Missouri. If you want to hunt something bigger, move up to a 30cal like a .308. If you need longer range for small critters drop back to a 22-250 or maybe even a .17. If you need a brush gun for deer go with a 30-30 or even the 45-70.

You can go to a 308 barrel. The 243 is based on the 308 so the reciever will work for both calibers.

H&R sells just the barrels for their rifles so you should be able to change the barrel.

the 308 will give you more distance & take down for hunting.

Because you got such a small frame rifle the best you can really do is the .308 win. It is a excelent caliber that you can get loads for varmit, loads for deer, and loads for elk and other big game. It has a great velocity that makes it easy to get some major distance.

270 or 270 short mag both are excellent in the field. they have range, knock down power, and not much recoil like shooting a 20 gauge shot gun. This is what I use.

243 is very versatile..good for deer or varmint..270would give you more knockdown power for bigger game...7mm or 300 min mag would get you into larger animals like moose.
