I married in September of 2006, but hadn't gotten my last name changed with the Social Security Administration until 2007. When filling out my 2006 taxes this year do I use my legal name NOW, or my maiden name, which was my legal name for all of 2006?

NO! Do NOT do what the first person said or your refund will be delayed.

THe IRS matches the FIRST 4 letters of your LAST NAME from your return to the SSA records. You MUST use the name on your SSN CARD!!!!!!

You can also use a hyphenated name as long as the name on the SSN card is at least 4 letters long:

Maiden name = Smith
Married Name = Jones

You can go on the return as "MARY SMITH"
-or- you can be "MARY SMITH-JONES"

BUt NOT "MARY JONES-SMITH"

If your Maiden name is "NGO"

DON'T try "NGO-JONES" because that would try to match "NGO-" with "NGO_" and it's not a match

You must notify the IRS, your home STATE, and your drivers license, drivers registration by the state, (plus all of your credit card and credit bureaus).
You must have a legal document to send or provide to each - such as marriage license.

When you file by your social security number - in the category such as Married,
and you sign the document, sign as:

Miss Mary smith aka Mrs. Mary Jones.

That way you are covered until you legally change your name with all authorities.

However, you may get audited because you didn't send them the proper information.

GOD bless us one and all, always.
