Wow, what a good son/daughter you are. Restaurant gift cards are one of my favorite things. I love to get them for restaurants that I haven't been to before. A good excuse to try something new.
P.S. My husband and i just celebrated our 40th. You might want to tell your dad that the ruby is the suggested gift for the 40th. Even though it's traditional, I bet your mom would love to have one.
By the way... our kids gave us a picture of themselves. We haven't had a group shot of them in a long time. The photographer imprinted "Happy 40th anniversary Mom and Dad" right on the picture. It was terrific.

A meal is always a good idea.
How about tickets for a steam railway trip with lunch or dinner?
Or, a visit to a stately home/attraction (ie. National Trust, English Heritage)

On my parent`s 50th Anniversary we had a big party
We searched for their old friends and people who they used to work with and hadn`t seen for years
It was a great success
We also paid for them to have a weekend away the following weekend
There were tears all around

Just thinking, 40 years is a long long time - good for them. Do you know what I would do, send them off to a spa for a massage and a makeover for your Mum. I would love that and hope my kids are reading. Good luck you sound a considerate person.

If they like gardening why not a lovely red rose bush. They often have them especially for ruby weddings in your local garden centre. They will have it for ever and every time it blooms they will remember not only their aniversay but who gave it to them.

How about taking them for a nice meal? if you have siblings ask them too, no partners just the family, it will be nice for your mum and dad to be surrounded by their kids. plus if you do have siblings you can split the bill and the meal will be from you all!

What about a theatre break where they stay in a hotel and go and see a nice show and have a nice meal while they're away? try www.lastminute.com for ideas.
