Duplicate checks are just carbon copies to remind you to enter them in your check register.

Once you've transferred the information to your check register, you no longer need to keep the duplicate.

It is strongly suggested that all records be kept at least 7 years. Pain, isn't it? But you never know when you'll need proof of something. Realize though, that duplicate checks are not allowable in court, only the copy of the original. Just throw them in a box and label and keep them to stay safe...until 2014!

Depends on what they are for. If it is for something that was a one time deal, such as groceries or clothing, then you really don't need to keep it once it clears the bank. If it is for something such as electric or Nat Gas bill keep it for a year, so if they say you didn't pay your bill then you can find the check you did. A good rule of thumb though is to just keep all your records for that year and keep it. I have a file box with each bill w/ conf# and check numbers since I started paying bills. I know I don't need to have all of them, but if anything is ever brought into question I have them and they don't take up that much space and the boxes are only like 15 dollars.

ANY checks that has to do with taxes you need to save for a lifetime. Despite what some people say about the IRS only going back a few years, THEY can go back to the beginning of your taxpaying years.

Other things such as the electric bill and monthly expenses you really only need to keep a year or two.
