Well, there still has to be some kind of legislation on marriage and these have to adapt to society.
The Bible doesn't say anything about jaywalking or red lights either, but we still need these laws.

Wow. Very good question. I've seen this type pop up before in the context of gay marriage. What you're talking about is the origin of the institution of marriage, getting to the absolute heart of understanding it. Good for you! Marriage is an institution created by God. It was given to our first parents, Adam and Eve. Once it is understood that the sacrament is a gift from God - has its origins with Him - it shows that marriage is not a human creation. It does not belong to us, we do not own it. If we do not own marriage, we do not have the right to change or redefine.

The human laws are basically social, secular laws put in place to govern the material aspects associated with marriage, like property ownership, money, insurance benefits, and anything else you can think of. These laws are important. However, law should never try to redefine the core of marriage. It is crossing the line when it does that.

Marriage in the bible is presented as something that concerns not only the man and woman directly involved, but also their families and the larger community. There are numerous laws concerning marriage, covering such things as who is allowed to marry who, how allegations of adultery are dealt with, how various conflicts involving marriage are settled, sexual relations within and outside marriage, divorce, polygamy, levirate marriage, etc. The laws aim to foster peace in the family (shalom bayt) which was the extended family, not the modern concept of nuclear family, and to regulate human relationships between families and society.

All governmental authority is appointed by God, even wicked authority. These authorities have been vested the right to administer God's law. Human government is the only entity that is efficient enough to administer God's law correctly. I am not preaching theocracy here, for i do not believe in theocracies. The church is so disorganized that it cannot administer God's law uniformly or fairly; thus, God has given secular government the power to do so. In the beginning of Mosaic Law, Israel was, in effect a nation-church, and was able to administer God's law effectively. It was never God's intent that Israel rule the world; thus secular government was given the power over civil affairs of the people. Marriage as a civil ceremony is allowed to further show man his sinful nature. God prefers marriage to stay within the confines of the church, but would rather see a couple living in civil unity, rather than living in mortal sin.

I once read that we are to obey the laws of the land. That is the closest thing I know to your topic. However it is not by law that you have to marry.
If I may add. Marriage it is a social status created for society. It is a convenient way to keep track of your decedents and family tree.

You can get married under any conditions or in any way that you care to, but if you want your marriage to be recognized by the country you're living in, you must be married according to its laws.

Romans 13:1-7 admonishes all worshipers of God to be in subjection to the governmental authorities. Governmental authorities usually regulate marriage so that it must be licensed and registered.

So in whatever land we live, we should be submissive to its legislation regarding marriage.

It's not. The moment you mate with a woman you are married in God's eyes. If you desert him/her you fall out of grace unless they were cheating on you. After that you become a fornicator or adulterer.

That is a law of governments, who hijacked the religious institution of marriage for its own cashcow.

So, all you who preach the 'separation of church and state' issue, why do you allow government to be involved in religion in such instances?
