Treadmills are good for distance running and basic cardio.. They are actually better in some ways than running outside because you can maintain the same speed. If you are trying to run sprints on a treadmill then yes, that could cause a problem... Practice going faster while holding the railings, then gradually get balanced before you let go...

Try running in place as fast as you can without falling. Or, try starting very slowly on the treadmill and have it set to gradually increase speed so you are comfortable with it going faster.

I suggest that you maybe start at a slow pace on the treadmill then build up to a faster speed. I use to not like the treadmills because they scared me but now I know how to work it.

If your at a gym, they must have stationary bikes, stair climbers etc. These are just as good for aerobics and losing weight etc. On a tread mill you don't have to run so fast that your can't keep up and balanced, just walk at the pace you can easily handle and stay on longer. I hold my palms on the side bars lightly as to keep my balance and stay the feeling of going to fall off. Remember, jogging is just as good as running - jogging is at a slower pace and you will lose calories and straighten your heart and lungs as well and is less strain on your body.

No running for real outside is better.
