Sherwin Nuland wrote a great book about the history of medicine called Doctors: The Biography of Medicine. He has written a ton of other books about aging, death & dying, so take a look at his books.

Mary Roach wrote a very entertaining book about what happens to us after death called Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers.

John McPhee wrote a neat book called Heirs of General Practice, about family practice in more rural settings. Beach Conger's book Bag Balm and Duct Tape: Tales of a Vermont Doctor is in a similar vein.

Richard Wertz' book Lying In: A History of Childbirth in America is a bit old, but a very interesting history.

Atul Gawande's book Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science is a thoughtful book about the powers and limits of medicine.

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman is a great book about cross cultural issues in medicine.

Anyway, I hope you find something that piques your interest!

There's a great book, really a masterpiece, and it's simply titled "The History of Medicine". I can't remember the author but it should be easily found. Excellent background on all the past events that have gone into what we think of as medicine today.
