If I take a drug for which there is no generic, and insurance covers some of the cost, will the price be the same no matter which pharmacy I go to?

When you have the Pharmacy bill your insurance, your insurance determines the cost.....not the Pharmacy (price is same).

When you don't have insurance then the Pharmacy determines the price (no two prices are the same).

Hope this helps

Nope. There could be quite a difference in price from one place to another. The only way to tell is to call them up. It gets difficult to tell a patient what their final cost will be if you have the type of insurance that pays a variable amount. But, most pharmacies should be able to tell you over the phone a base price. Different pharmacy have different levels of buying power with many drugs. So, the big chains can get them cheaper, sometimes, with their huge volume. Plus, they can sell them cheaper, sometimes, because they have such a huge volume going out and to build an even larger customer base. It's one of the reasons you don't see many Mom and Pop pharmacies anymore. They just can't compete with the big guys pricing.

Prices can definitely vary greatly between one pharmacy and another. It wil depend on your insurance. Usually though, if it goes through insurance, the insurance will dictate what the cost will be and therefore the cost to the patient should be the same regardless of which pharmacy is chosen.

I picked up the generic version of Ambien for my mother from three different pharmacies. One charged $78 for a 30 day supply, another charged $56 and yet another charged $28. Insurance didn t not cover any of them so absolutely they charge different prices. Definitely shop around.

In general, large chain pharmacies will be cheaper than independent pharmacies because of volume.
However, depending on your insurance, you might still pay the same price, wherever you go.

Not in the United States, prices vary quite a bit no matter what kind of drug you take.
