What is a voltmeter? I'm asking this because i'm going to do a project and it there is this voltmeter.

Do i really need it for this project or it is just used to measure the volts? (or whatever =.=)

Ok what is a voltmeter? I have this project (no im not making a voltmeter) It has a voltmeter needed.

Is the voltmeter really required for this (above) project?

ok got my answer. thanks to brazlebridge.. anyway, my main goal is to make a turbine to power a small light bulb, i don't really wanna measure the power or anything.. thanks guys ^_^

A voltmeter measures volts. A volt is a unit for measuring Electro-Motive Force (EMF). Voltage is the potential to push a current of electrons through a resistance.
I was originally going to say that you probably do not need one but one of your other answerers is quite correct and it is better to err on the side of safety. If the voltage pushes anything more than about 0.0005 Amps through your heart or your brain then it can kill you.
The project also calls for an Ohmmeter. Most meters are usually multi-meters capable of measuring Volts, Ohms and Amps.
The Ohmmeter is used to check for the integrity of your connections.
I doubt that the coils described in the project will present much more than a fraction of an Ohm in resistance.
A good multimeter is a good tool to have in life so I would recommend buying one and learning how to use it.
I prefer a DMM (Digital Multi-Meter). It makes it easier to measure very small resistances.
I think that the project will generate Alternating Current (AC) and not Direct Current (DC).
Please note that the Earth's North magnetic pole is actually a South Magnetic pole. They were labelled before the idea of like poles repelling was properly understood just like the plus and minus of batteries were labelled before we understood that an electron had a negative charge. (Purely semantics)

A voltmeter tells you how much electrical current you are getting. Yes, you need the meter because you cannot see electric current. There are two types of volt meters one is analog (it has a needle in it and reads like a gas gauge in a car) the other is a digital meter ( it detects really low voltage and is more precise).
A volt meter can prevent you from being electrically shocked and possibly killed. It is a really useful tool. This wind turbine probably couldn't shock you hard enough to kill you but a volt meter will tell you how much energy you are producing.
Good Luck!

you can make it
our school got a prize for making a voltameter.
i know to make it but its hard to explain it in written
its used to measure volts

it measures the potential difference between two points in an electric circuit.
