It's not as bad as everybody says, trust me. I had four out, two that were impacted (growing into my jaw) and I still felt very little pain... that's the great thing about Tylenol 3's. As long as you take them as they prescribe, you'll be fine :)
Anasthetic is not anything to worry about either. All they do is put an IV into your hand and you count to a hundred... you wake up a few hours later a bit groggy and you go home! You will be asleep the whole time, so you won't remember anything about the surgery.
As for the swelling, your face will swell, you will look similar to a chipmunk (square face, puffed jaw) for at least a week while you heal... for most people it lasts 2-3 weeks though. I wouldn't count on any photo ops for about a month, it makes most people a bit self conscious ;)
It's not a big deal, so don't worry about it. Everyone has them out eventually :)

First of all, don't worry about the anesthetic. What you will have is a medication, such as Versed, that is injected into an IV site. This medicine will basically make you go to sleep, then you wake up and everything's done. When I had all 4 of mine removed, I woke up and didn't know what happened or where I was at. You will not feel any pain, until later in the evening. But your dentist will prescribe you pain medication. I would advise taking it around the clock for at least two days. Because once the numbing medicine wears off, you will be in pain. So, take it early to avoid it. I also had to sleep on the couch, propped up to prevent throbbing at night. You mentioned being worried about the swelling in your face--there will be some, but not hideously. Use ice packs on your jaws to help with the swelling and also pain. It will go down in a couple of days. There may also be some bruising, but that will go away as well. Don't worry about it, just go have it done and get it over with. It's not the worst thing to go through. You will do fine.

General anesthesia doesn't hurt.

You'll go sit in a small room like a dentists office and sit in a chair kind of like a dentists chair. They will attach an IV to your arm. It doesn't hurt.

They will tell you that you will be feeling sleepy, and BOOM....you will wake up and your mouth will be full of gauze and your mouth will be numb, and you will finally believe that the surgery is over before you even knew you went to sleep!

You will need someone to drive you home, and they will have to pick up your pain meds so you have them. You need to take them before your pain starts...it takes a while for your surgery painkillers to wear off, but takes even longer for your prescription painkillers to start working. If you take your meds on time, you won't have much pain.

Don't eat anything hot after your surgery, or anything hard. You can burn or bite your tongue, and it will be numb, so you won't know it until you are bleeding. You can't drink out of a straw either, because the suction could start bleeding after surgery.

My face turned a little bit green along the jawline, and swelled a little. My face looked like a triangle for a couple days, but it really wasn't bad. It just felt swollen.

NO...it doesn't really hurt at all.

Its no problem. The dentist gave me a shot to numb my gums and pulled them right out. There was no swelling of the face or anything like that. Once the anesthetic wore off it hurt a little but it didn't last long.

You'll be uncomfortable for a day or so, and there may be minor swelling, but normally after the first day, you can pretty much carry on as normal, just eating softer foods. Nothing to worry about...really.

Suz, listen to me darling,
I know it is common practice to remove wisdom teeth in many western countries. it does not -i repeat does NOT necessarily mean it is something one should do (unless the teeth have gone seriously bad or anything). Teeth is there for a reason. in my country nobody removes wisdom teeth. that's why we are so wise (joking). trust me, listen to another opinion, the dentist will definitely want to remove it, because it means money to him. i suggest think again.

PS: do not look forward for general anesthesia, mine appeared after a terrible car accident, and my body did not like it at all.

G.
