When people ask for help quite often they do not know what they need. Usually they feel that material things will solve their problems, but material goods like money are temporary. The long-term fix comes through spiritual development. All problems have a spiritual cause at the their root, and this cause is usually a lack of peace. A lack of peace is caused by a lack of prayer and contemplation. People find it increasingly difficult o find a quiet place to spend time with God and meditate upon his word. Most people demand that the cart be placed before the horse; in other words, they want someone else to solve the problem for them with a magic wave of the hand, rather than examine themselves to determine what is wrong. Jesus is always their to help, as well as his servants, but a person has to be willing to put for effort himself.

I would say people try to help with what the person needs, but end up on helping with what they think the other or others need. That's why communication is so important. Asking the other what they need helps a lot. Sometimes it requires a series of questions to help pinpoint what the other truly needs.

in depth question with only a subjective answer-
it would depend on the situation.

say your friend is an addict-if you helped them in what they wanted you would have to help them get more drugs to support their habit. but if you got them what you thought they needed, which i hope would be help, food, etc-then you would be thought to be arrogant and superior by choosing for them.

if the situation was that your friend wanted a new jacket, but you thought they needed pants, then that is a totally different situation.

so like i said based on the situation only can that question be answered

Elegant question. We would have to operate on the basis of what we think they need, even if we were giving them what they need, since only by thinking can we arrive at any idea of what they need.

This is a philosophical question - I would point out however that its arrogant to think you know what they need better than they do.
