Good question. And it really underscores the need for a standard. Because let's face it, viewpoints are like noses - everybody's got one.

This question also underscores the truthfulness of the scripture found at Jeremiah 10:23: "To earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step." Man was not created to live his life independent of God. That is why society is such a mess. Because Adam and Eve decided to do what THEY thought was best. And God pretty much said, "Fine, I will leave you to yourselves. And as it plays out, all we learn that my sovereignty is best."

Here now man has exercised virtually every form of government you can think of: democracy, monarchy, aristocracy, autocracy, Fascism, and Communism. They are all inadequate.

In the final analysis, it is God who decides what is best for humankind. And that is why his kingdom, an actual government, will soon take over and provide to obedient mankind the best world ever. After all, do we not pray for that at Matthew 6:10? ". . . let your kingdom come, let your will take place on earth as it is in the heavens." Does anybody reasonably believe that the foolishness that takes place on this earth happens in heaven? Of course not!

God knows what is best for society but man rejects Him and His revelation.

In fact this whole world is under the judgement of God and will be destroyed for it's sin and rebellion. God in His great mercy temporarily spares it from final destruction that He may rescue out from this world a people for Himself. He takes out His pearl of great price. He allows time for repentance and for man to see the mess he has made and to come to his senses. History is replete with man's utter failures. Apart from His intervention there is no hope.

While we live here we can only cry to Him both for ourselves and for others. His people are like salt, a preservation of society, and the irony is that as they are persecuted and removed from society so the destruction of society is advanced.

As with Lot in Sodom, when the number of righteous falls, at some point God will rescue them and bring in the deserved judgement that will destroy society.

Ultimately it is God Who decides what will happen.

I am only thankful that He spared that I might be saved and so I desire others that same merciful and inexpressible blessing.

Society is organised by consensus. There are many different mechanisms...government and politics, fashion, media, even common behaviours can over ride laws, as in the way marijuana is consumed relatively freely.

As long as enough people agree with something, the common consensus finds its way into the way we live.

We vote for our representatives who write & enact laws for the common good. They don't always succeed but we have one of the best governmental systems going.
