ThIis a question that is often asked, in my opinion the answer is no.In my case the reason for this opinion is due to the fact that I am an ex regular and territorial army soldier. The reason that national service should not be re-introduced is that the regular and reserve forces are made up of highly trained and dedicated individuals,To implement national service would mean bringing in people with no real interest who would just be counting days to their discharge, also, service personal are there because they volunteered and are in the job of there own choosing,my time in the army did me a lot of good, but as I say,it was voluntary.

I did my National Service and I do not regret the experience. It did make men of us and disciplined men as well. Conditions were a lot worse than todays Army and our pay was almost nothing. You did meet people from all walks of life. in our squad we had a proffesional wrestler and A Scotish lords son. We also had a racecourse Bookie and as we were training at catterick, this bookie used to try to get on the racecourse every Saturday. Of course like every barrack room you had your Barrack room lawyer, and the barrack room Moneylender. But the cameraderie was fantastic.

I did ny N/S from 1956 to 1958, and did me no harm what so ever. it was the first time I had been away from home and had to look after myself.
the discipline seemed hard (painting coal etc.) but all had a purpose.

bring it back? what for? to go and fight wars that do not seem to be relevant to our countries interests?

people are better educated than they were 50 odd years ago, i do not think this would work now.

It should be brought back, but as for immigrants etc. Why would the forces want them ? Criminals are useless would you want them defending you? Immigrants may have allegiance to other countries etc. Tougher prisons and longer time spent in jail is better for the criminals, people say the prison doesn't work it does it keeps them off the street. As far as people coming into the country is concerned once they are UK citizens they have to live by our laws so if there is national service they would have to do it like everyone else. I include my own kids in that. It should also apply to girls as well.

no, serving in the military should be a choice not a mandatory obligation. It is immoral to force somebody to take arms against a fellow human being against their will.

I do however believe that there should be an obligation for community service to those who claim benefits and early school leavers as work expeience improves the chances of getting a job

i think so unless the child (young adult)can show he/she is going into full time work or has a placement in a college were upon they sign contracts to honour that placement .if not its off to see Sargent no ****.not just to keep the little buggers in check but to make sure they don't go to waste either, too much talent goes to waste in Britain.but the forces should be more like their American cousins where education is at the forefront.

Yes it should!
I would make it a compulsory replacement for "community service" punishments that are basically just a slap on the wrist.

It would teach the "yoof" generation some respect and make them better human beings who can contribute possitively towards society..

If they bring it back, they should be used right here in the states to help with disasters and help on the border patrol until they prove they are no longer of a criminal mind. Are we sure we want them in a war with soldiers who want to be there? What if they decide to turn on our soldiers?
