Not only is the Bush administration escalating the occupation of Iraq, it is also increasing the threat of military action against Iran, while launching air strikes against Somalia Rangel pointed to these tendencies in November 2006, shortly after the midterm elections, when he said on CBS’s “Face the Nation, “If we’re going to challenge Iran and challenge North Korea . . . we can’t do that without a draft.”

So the essence of the this so-called draft is get the Amerian troops at a striking distance to its percieved enemies.

No country would standby and watch you unleash destruction on them. They would definately resist in a way they believe would hurt you most. One Republican Senator described Bush's startegy as the worst politial blunder by any Amerian President since Vietnam

A draft has ALWAYS been controversial and disliked by those in the chosen group. Iraq is also controversial DUH.

Regardless of how you feel about the war a draft does have some positives.

A large percentage of hiring managers think that the 18-28 age group is a PAIN in the DONKEY as employees. They come from the "Entitled Generation" (UCONN Research) and because of how they were raised they have this feeling of self-importance that is annoying. Most of them have NO idea how to EARN what they have because it has always been GIVEN to them.

So a little Military Service might just refocus this generation on what is really important in life. They might just learn a little discipline and accountability instead of mommy and daddy always bailing them out or throwing money at a situation.

If you are a good student and going to college, there are defirments so that you can continue your education. There are also other valid reasons for you to get a walk.

Now you have the kids with no direction, poor home life and NO future beyond a minimum wage for life or welfare.

I ENLISTED because I was one of those kids and the military gave me the foundation AND TRAINING for a nice career in electronics. I did NOT enlist to avoid the draft; I just figured the Navy had the best training and took advantage of what was offered. I also thought riding on a big ship would be COOL and minimize my chances of getting shot at.

Without the Military I would have never been a company president and stayed in a little mid-west town working in the Market stocking produce.

I might also mention that I have made 6 figures, unquestioned expense accounts, seen most of the world and had the opportunity to meet many of the captains of the electronics industry; I also never got around to getting a college degree of any kind. I simply built upon whatI had been taught in the Navy and applied the personal discipline and accountability to my business life.

It also would seem that people like to work for me because they ALWAYS know what is expected with the appropriate reward or correction.

I will also tell you that ANY VET that submits a resume goes to the TOP of the pile! I figure that they can be taught everything but ATTITUDE and that is what I am looking for.

Is the "WAR" right? Who Knows? Is Military Service good for some people? YOU BET YOUR DONKEY!

The new troops going to Iraq weren't drafted. They are already in. Some the troops 'going' to Iraq are already there. They just had their tours extended. A draft would be disastrous for the military. I recognize you people keep harping on it because you believe it would cause mass protests and force the government to pull out of Iraq. But NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY, in the military wants a draft. That is because the quality of the average recruit would plummet. Right now, everyone in the military is there because they want to be. Nobody just woke up one morning wearing camouflage with no memory of how they got there. Innocent young Americans? You make it sound as if they were kidnapped from their day care centers and forced to go to war. These people volunteered knowing full well what the risks were.

Btw, Rangel is a complete loon and I recommend you stop listening to him. I don't expect you to suddenly become a Republican or anything, but at least listen to a Democrat with some common sense.

It isn't President Bush's idea to reinstate the draft, nor is it the idea of anyone in his administration !! Nor is there any stated intention to "invade Iran"...

The ONLY suggestion of a draft (from anyone who could bring one about) has been from Representative Charles Rangel NY (D) as you stated. In fact HE put up legislation to restart the Draft back in 2003 and then voted against his own BILL !!

President Bush hasn't challenged Iran or North Korea yet... he's pushed HARD for diplomatic efforts through the UN and EU and 6-party talks.

We've increased the threat against Iran ?? Nope... just moved an extra CVBG (Carrier Battle Group) into the area in the event Iran takes the action of blocking the Strait of Hormuz that THEY have threatened.

Somalia... yep, we (USA) were invited by the governent of Somalia to help route out some Al Queda terrorists !! Part of the Global War on Terror that liberals whine that we're NOT fighting. All taken care of by a SINGLE AC-130 that has a crew of 13.

Stop your liberal, misinformed, "the sky-is-falling" statements. Spend your time digging your fall-out shelter for the hell that will happen if Hillary Rodham ever became POTUS.

Liberals love to push for a draft to SCARE the American voters... and to employ tens of thousands of otherwise unemployable minorities.

First, I would just like to say, I am NOT in support of a draft by any means. Thousands were drafted into the Vietnam war, and thousands died. I tend to think part of the reason was because they were drafted, processed, and sent so fast they never received proper training or were even remotely prepared for what they were about to face. Surviving in a jungle with live bullets flying is a whole lot different than surviving boot camp.

That being said, facing threats such as North Korea is not going to be an easy task. I saw a news broadcast of their army marching once. It was in such perfection, I was in awe. If their marching is that precise, lord knows they won't go down without a fight. Not to mention there are more than a million in their military. So, if this situation snowballs so far down that our leadership feels absolutely compelled to attack them, I will have to agree with Rangel that we would need more than a few thousand willing, combat-trained, and brave souls to face them. So, unless 1 out of 5 young men in this country join the military post haste around the time of the planned attack, we would need to draft. So, therefore, I find myself hoping they can resolve this more peacefully.

As for the details of a draft, I do agree with an above poster about equality, even as a woman myself. If women want to preach about equality and sexism, then preach on sisters. Join the military.

President Bush IS NOT drafting any "innocent young Americans" for a invasion of Iran. The
only idiot talking about drafting anyone is Democrat Rangel of New York. The Defense Department and the Pentagon DO NOT WANT A DRAFT!!!

President Bush's idea for a draft???? What have you been smoking?

If you take the time to carefully peruse the newspapers, not a one of which supports the Bush Administration, you will note that they are very careful to make sure that they put the idea of a possible new draft on the shoulders of those who have suggested it.

And that would be Rep. Charles Rangel, a DEMOCRAT from NEW YORK. You even state it in your own quote from Rangel.

So how would this be Bush's idea?

Do you actually bother to read the idiocy that you type?

Well if we did invade Iran, chances are that China would somewhat help Iran, because they are allie's. But at the same time japan had alot of people 2 but it only took 1 bomb to shut them up (the 2nd one was just to show them we were serious)..I believe they might start the draft soon, if you look at the military world wide, they are kicking out alot of people thus making room for the draft if they cant refill those spots

I don't recall him mentioning bringing back the draft. And, actually, he could initiate the draft, but congress would have to approve to reinstate a draft.

If they do, I think it is time to abolish the selective service, and draft everyone, regardless of gender. Even though women do not serve in combat units, they could be drafted into the support roles that are needed.

This is 2007, not 1965, if there is truly going to be equality, the draft should be no exception.

the authorities might want to probable not carry out very lengthy. definite, Iran's protection rigidity is lots superior than Iraq's changed into, and definite the Basij would variety thousands of thousands - yet however, the U. S. protection rigidity is lots superior. the human beings might want to carry out for decades. basically look at Vietnam and Iraq. it would not count number number if the authorities falls - guerilla conflict is amazingly uncomplicated, you should use rifles hostile to napalm and win, you purely favor to bide a at the same time as and not in any respect care about your casualty price.
