My 12 year old son is quite happy palying on the computer and on the video games. (No Video games during the school week) He plays sports during the spring and summer months. What else should he be doing? My husband is worried that he is sitting around too much. What do your kids do? suggestions are welcomed, please keep in mind that we live in Italy and we are only now learning the local language.

FYI...He has Club once a week, where he has seen to more of Itlay than My husband and I. we read, alot at least 1 hour a night. He has a very full schedule at school, that includes foreign language. We have more than enough homework (Takes us 2 hours most nights and we always have work on weekends)

Gosh, if he is doing all of these things plus getting his school work done, I would not worry too much. Maybe in the fall and winter, you and him could find some type of physical activity to do so that he stays in shape for the spring and summer sports. If he has any friends from school maybe he can hang out with them a little bit more. I would not worry too much, because he sounds like he has things together but ask him if there is anything he is interested in that he doesn't know much about, or if there is anything he would like to learn, see or do. That is a great way to start a conversation and find out what he is really into and build on that.

He should be doing basic chores around the house, keeping his room cleaning, taking out garbage etc. Maybe you can have a family game night or what we do is have a day trip once a month and go some where as a family. Good Luck!

It sounds like he has found some interests and really enjoys them..see if there are indoor places for him to play sports in the winter or if there are clubs that are set up for video game competitions.

New activities: READ READ READ
also explore some type of art: drama, painting, writing??

Start taking him to learn more about Italy. Spend more time and doing things as a family.Sight see and go to the museums more. Have him start doing more things with friends outside. Encourage more reading and get him to pick up the language faster. You have a great opportunity here don't waste it.

Actually, your son is doing quite enough. You haven't said how much time he spends studying, so I am going to presume that you're not worried about how time he spends studying but rather on extra-curricular activities. In that case, leave him alone. He's fine. The big mistake that a lot of people make is to over-schedule their children's lives. Children need some time to just do what they want... it helps to alleviate stress and makes it easier for them to handle their schedules and the pressures of school.

Sounds like he needs to add art or music to his life. How about a creative writing class or painting? Even an electric guitar would make him more well-rounded.

You live in beautiful Italy and he has a world of culture at his fingertips. Take that boy to museums! You are so lucky!

make sure he is socializing with other kids! he probably is if he's playing sports. when he isn't playing (during the fall and winter,) you should make sure he's getting some socialization, as well as some excercise. go for walks as a family, and take an active interest in meeting his friends! other than that, just make sure he's keeping his grades up and not having any problems in school.

Well, spend more time with him during the vacations. He may be behaving like that cause you don't spend enough time with him. i also suggest you ask him why he does that and what else he would like to do during spring and summer. to every problem, there's a solution.

Send him outdoors to play!! It sounds like you have his whole life planned for him-give him time to ride a bike. a skateboard or swim. Time to talk and josh with his friends. Time to be a kid.
