You know, you have to cover all the bases.

I'd take a rosary, a horseshoe, some wafers and wine, Tibetan prayer beads, hell, I'd pray to the tooth fairy if I was trapped in a building surrounded by Nazis during WWII.

And you could be sure I wouldn't be walking under any ladders.

People under duress will say any of a million different things. They can't be held responsible for their actions if they're afraid for their lives.

What I love is the implication of the 'no atheist in foxhole' comment: 'Hey! Come to Christianity! The religion of people who are desperate!' It's like they're almost confirming Christianity's role as a pacifier...

A historical note--foxholes were from WWI.

and a logical one--you can pray to/with all that stuff and still be a denier of the existence of god. In particular, Tibetan prayer beads have very little do with theos or theism.

Don't confuse a-theism with ir-religiosity. or walk under any ladders, or the tooth fairy might drop a horseshoe down your shirt.

There are only atheists in foxholes-there are no deluded religionists. Both my father and grandfather fought through a war and they never even had the remotest belief in God. Seeing the horrors of war would be enough to make any sane person come to the realisation that there is no God, or at least not one that influences human existence.

Don't you know the tooth fairy is a Nazi? She worked at Buchenwald after being wounded on the russian front. As for the no athiest question, it just proves that we use religion as a last resort

good point.
it only goes to show that many people only seek God when the are in deep doo-doo
and need Him.
otherwise it is "I don't need God, I can handle things all by myself" and people then become
their own god.....
and even then, when storm clouds appear, wonder why God does not hear them.
