How to apply for a shotgun or firearms certificate is to contact the firearms departmen at your local constabulary HQ.
They wii send out the relavent paperwork for you to get the ball rolling.
Providing you dont have any convictions then you stand a good chance of gaining any certificate.
Ounce you apply the fun begins, they vet you, try to find out all they can on you.
To stand a chance of gaining your certificate, i would join your local clayshooting club, rifle club etc thats if you dont already have any land to shoot on with permision.
If you have nothing to hide, then while your application is away been prossesed then its an idea to instal a police approved gun cabinet, to which they will come out to inspect. The cabinet has to be securley fastend to a main wall.
Any more tips or questions drop me a line

Depends what you want to shoot. Air rifles still don't require a firearms licence so if you want to shoot targets or the odd rabbit (with the landowners permission) this may be an option. It is becoming more and more difficult to get a firearms licence on a more and more restricted amount of weapons. The penalties are quite Draconian with a mandatory five year sentence for offences under the firearms act. Otherwise, yes apply for a licence via the Police.

Yes, it is correct, you have to go to the Police. But thats where your trouble will start. You haven't said whether you wish to license a shotgun or some other weapon. What determines whether it is necessary is the muzzle energy. I may have spelt that incorrectly. You can legally go up to 12lbs and after that its a Licence. That means filling in an appication form and I think two references will be required. You will of course have to show why you require to use the weapon; where you are going to use it; you must have shooting rights if over Land; You must have a strong fit for purpose Gun Cabinet securely fixed to an inside wall in a locked room of your property. If you are in Leasehold or Rented property you will require the express permission of the Landlord.
There is also an annual fee which used to be £40 but that's bound to be say £100 now.
Also, unless you are a farmer, it would certainly be necessary for you to belong to a Gun Club.
You will also have to show that you are also 100% mentally stable.
Remember Dunblane and Hungerford; two maniacs with Firearms Licences and Gun Club members.
A Police Officer of Inspector Rank or above must ratity your application.

I don't live in the UK but my understanding is that, at least in Britain, one requires membership in a shooting/hunting club in order to obtain one.
It's kind of funny that if you are a Muslim immigrant you can buy everything you need to build a bomb and all without a permit, isn't it? lol

Check with your local police station they have a licencing officer for firearms, he/she will be more than willing to help. If you have a criminal record forget it.
