Because China will not see Taiwan as a separate country.

And also, because Taiwan is basically a part of China. Although Taiwan has been trying to separate itself culturally from China (keeping the traditional writing system, etc.), they're still distinctly Chinese...with very Chinese traditions and habits.

I am French and work in China. I often talk about it with some friends here and for them there is no problem about this because Taiwan is and will always be Chinese. They do not recognise it as a country but as a province because they speak the same language, have the same culture, are Chinese.

By from the Taiwanese point of view it is quite different. A lot of them are against going back to Main Land China. So that's why they are these tensions. And even if most of the western countries say there is only one China they still support Taiwan as an independant country.

In China they think that because Taiwan are Chinese ( look alike ) they know how they feel inside. So that's why if should just like Hong-Kong and Macau come back to it's origin.

And still according to China, Mongolia should also be part of China because it was before part of it.

Because if you recognize them as distinct it would anger China. With the growing role China is playing in the international economy that angering it isn't a good idea.
