It doesn't. There are two different genealogies given for Joseph in the New Testament. Apologists say the one in Luke is actually Mary's even though genealogy in Jewish culture was traced only through the paternal line.

Both Mary and Joseph were of David but Joseph was just a step father to Jesus Christ that God really trusted with His Son.

the answer to your question lies in Luke 3. now keeping in mind that both Mary and Joseph were in the heritage of David, but that MEN were titled and not the women, starting in verse 23 of chapter 3 in Luke the lineage of Christ is presented not only to the line of David, but also all the way back to Adam, and if you take the linage forward from Adam, you will also find that there is a prostitute in Christ's heritage.

There is a genealogy of Mary that leads to David. Christ is a step son of Joseph true as we who follow Jesus are also by faith adopted in to the line of Abraham. Jesus by birthright was a Son of David and also by bloodline through Mary a descendant of David.

The Bible establishes quite well the lineage of Mary as being from King David.

In Luke we are given Mary's lineage, which normally doesn't count in jewish law except for one little story in the Bible about a man named Zelophehad who dies having had no sons. His daughters went to Moses and protested that their father's inheritance would be lost to them because they were not son's and that was not fair. So Moses says that it can be passed on to the daughter provided there is no son or brother to whom it can be passed.

Such is the case of Mary - she had no brothers, only sisters.
