I found this beautiful calico and her 4 kittens under the foundation of a house 30 mile from my home. I managed to trip cage the kittens (about 7 weeks old) and found them all wonderful homes.Mom was very friendly and easy to handle. Asked everyone in the neighborhood if anyone owned her and they all said she was a stray that showed up 3 - 4 months ago. They all fed her since she showed up, but no one wanted to take her in. She is only a young cat herself. Vet said about 11 months old. I have had her spaded and kept her. My question is, if she should get out of the house, will she run away back to her old neighborhood 30 miles away. I take her for walks around our property on a leash every morning and night because she cries to go out. She is really good on the leash. After about 1/2 hour she will lead me back to our step and into our house.

I know it seems a little harsh, but you really should keep her indoors at all times. Walking her on a leash is an ok compromise, but it's still possible she'll pick up fleas, tapeworms, or scabies/"The Mange", from something in the environment outside. Keeping her indoors entirely is really the best way of keeping her healthy and safe.

Most my experience (though not extensive) says that cats tend to spend their entire lives in about a 4 block radius, so the idea of a cat finding their way back to a neighborhood 30 miles away before you can find them is a bit fantastic. I think you'd be better off investing in a collar with a bell ( to make it easier to find her ), a tag with your name and address on it, and maybe one of those Avid chips (so if she's brought in to any vet, they'll have your name on file, and will be able to contact you to come get her).

if she is leading you back to the house on her own, she considers that her new "safe place" and home. If mom was friendly, chances are she won't leave. She was hiding to protect the kittens. We had a cat for years that loved us, but would run and hide when it was time to give birth. It protects the kittens, but it also protects her from predators while she's giving birth.

There is a good chance that when her previous owners found she was pregnant, that they decided to abandon her. They will usually do this because they know or hope that another kind person will take her in or that the people in the new neighborhood will care for her. So this home probably wasn't her "home" to begin with. It was just a safe place to give birth to and care for her kittens.

Sounds to me like she has chosen a new home and feels happy and safe to be with you. If you can keep up with the leash I would do it. She obviously knows where her home is now as she leads you back there. Cats find their way home by the smells around it and the rest of their territory so you are giving her the best possible "training" and if she should acidentally get out I think she would come right back to you.

I would confine her to the house for a good 3 months, just as one would do with a new kitten, until she understands this is her new home.

She's probably used to being outdoors and hunting.

My cat is an indoor-outdoor cat, and right now he is sick with an ear infection and while he is being treated and recovering, he must remain indoors. But he wants to go outside because this is what he is used to. So I have blocked the kitty door and set up a litter box. He still wants to go out, but I give him lots of love and reassurance and he seems to be adjusting.

I don't think that she wants to go back...If she leads you back to the house, she considers it her home. But if she does run away, at least you'll know where to find her. My cat Co-Jak hates going outside, and whenever I take him with me to a friends house, he goes nuts and when we ride back home, I open the door and he runs to the front door and meows constantly until he's inside. Once a cat knows where their home is, they won't want to leave it.

She probably wont leave you. But if she dose, it will most likely be for a week or two. My cat has left my house twice but came back.

If she gets to know you very well then she will come back if she gets out. She knows that you are the one feeding her and stuff so she will come back. You did a very good thing by getting her spayed! Good for you!!! Hope I helped!

dont think so.She knows where her real home is now.She loves you and they are smart.I had the same experience with my cat too.Took her in and when she did get out she was back later on.I only felt that once the cat gets out its hard to keep them in since they are use to the outside and survival...

you should never adopt a stray cat or dog and plus the cat is used to the outside world and what will happen to the 4 little kittens shes got so i suggest that you let her go back to the location . trust Me you should do this !
