no it does not turn people into zombies. i have worked with many people that are bipolar, including my brother. they could not function without their medication. my brother worked 40 hours a week in a factory, when he was on his medication. when he stopped taking it, he could not function. sometimes people have unpleasant side effects of the medication, but the good outweighs the bad

Not all meds turn people into zombies. As long as you and your doctor discuss your meds and you find the right combination and the right dosages of each one for you, you won't necessarily be a zombie. I have been on just about each and every med they make for bi-polar people (unless they have come out with new ones in the past three months), and some have made me zombies and some haven't. The ones I take now are great, I don't sit around and act like a zombie or anything, but then again, I have had some where I've been on the other end of the spectrum, and short of drooling down my chin have been zombie like. Just keep talking to your doctor about your side effects and how your meds are making you feel until you find the ones that are right for you. Good luck to you.

I'm bipolar and have been on medication for it for many years. None of which turned me into a zombie at all. The only time I have seen anyone really get that screwed up from the meds was a friend of mine who got out of a state hospital and was EXTREMELY overmedicated. The correct medication should help you to be more functional in your life, more able to be in control of it, not less.

You've heard right. Please read:
"Patients [have] been diagnosed with 'chemical imbalances' despite the fact that not test exists to support such a claim."
Psychiatrists know the dangers of the drug they prescribe. Published studies have shown that both the drugs themselves, and the sudden withdrawal from them, CAN CREATE aggressive behavior. In 2001 Mamoru Takuma stabbed eight schoolchildren to death and injured 15 others under the influence of a tranquilizer. Kip Kinkel killed 2 & injured 22 after opening fire in Springfield oregon, high school in 1999-while taking a psychiatric drug. In 2001, Andrea Yates drowned her five children ; antidepressants were her causes homocidal thoughts
according to the drug manufacturer. Do I need to continue?...
There are other alternatives to cure these so called "chemical imbalances", and I am proof of that. Been "normal" and a happy mother for more than 15 years.

Its essential to get the B-complex vitamins, since they work together to balance proper brain functioning.
Fatty acids, such Omega-6, Omega-3.
Magnesium and herbal extracts such:
St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum in Latin) is a long-living plant with yellow flowers. It contains many chemical compounds. Some are believed to be the active ingredients that produce the herb's effects, including the compounds hypericin and hyperforin.
Chinese schizandra berry, wild oats, and calamus root.

Not all of the medications do that. My doctor started me on Lamictal 3 weeks ago...the only side effect Ive had is a headache. It doesn't make me feel drowsy at all. I can really tell a difference already! Your doctor will just have to figure out what medicine and dose is right for you....everyone is different. Good luck!

Like any med's people reaction are different. Find the right med(one that you can function on and that has few side effect or side effects that your willing to live with) or mix of meds may take a while but is well worth it. At least it has been for me. There is a yahoo group that gives support for those who have bipolar and those have friend or love one with it.

The meds they have now a days don't turn people into zombies. Bi polars can be medicated and live totally healthy normal lives. As long as they stay on their meds.

I've been taking a lithium for slightly over a year. If anything, I am finding that I am more creative and energetic. It takes time to get the dose right though.
