silk but which would be durable enough to cover a chair in? I'd like it to be a curry-colored silk which would match my living room. Mmmmmm, yummy.

There are actually many, many synthetic fabrics (nylon, polyester, etc) that are woven to look like silk fabrics, including those specifically designed for covering furniture.

I would suggest you check out fabric stores in your area that carry upholstery fabrics to look for one that matches your budget and taste. Or contact your upholster directly- many have fabric sample books to show to customers. Speak with them regarding suggestions on what fabrics would work best on your particular chair (shape, amount of uses, etc. can all effect what fabric to use).
