Because we feel as though we are being stimulated. We feel livelier, more energetic, so the true nature of alcohol is hidden
People don't want face up to alcohol as a hard drug,or drug of any sort. Even medical staff and police drink to excess, despite seeing the effects up close so there is a lot of denial going on there.
Still can't see it? If you wire someone up so that you can see how much brain power it takes to do a very simple task drunk or sober, then you will see the sober person uses a small part of the brain while after 1 drink of wine, most of the brain was employed. The task was waving a finger in time to some music. Saw this done on TV and it was pretty scary.

It really depends on how much you drink and how your body reacts to the effects of alcohol. In most cases alcohol will be a stimulant to the social drinker, but unfortunately to the people out there who suffer from the disease alcoholism, nine times out of ten alcohol acts as a depressant.

I'm consider myself to be part of the 21st Century public, the truth is that alcohol acts as both a stimulant and depressant (refered to as biphasic response) and varies largely depending on the individual.

Good question. It's because it lowers your inhibitions. This gives the effect of a stimulant because of it's socializing 'benefits'. However, because it is a depressant, it tends to need topping up to keep the effect, which then leads to drunkenness. This is when it's true nature is felt. Best advice; drink to be sociable, stop before you become unsociable.

Alcohol appears to act as both a depressant and a stimulant (this is referred to as a biphasic response), and it appears to depend strongly on the individual involved.
Same with honey, depending on what part of the day you imbibe it.

I don't think it's viewed as a depressant as such, more that when you ingest alcohol a side effect is that it lowers your inhibitions, therefore making you feel you can do things you wouldn't normally do. Hence the comparison with a stimulant.
