The English word "discipline" is from the Latin "discipulus" meaning "pupil". In concept, it refers to the training by instruction and practice.

To learn self-control one must first know the behavior required. Then one needs to make a choice to set whatever goal is required to attain that behavior. The rest is repetition of the behavior until it becomes habit.

Some people find that setting up a system of rewards and punishments helps. Some find that this turns the task into a game. Many find that it is easier to find a teacher to help them learn discipline.
