Most of them do but many new comers from other countries don't and have to take courses at the local junior college or night school to learn.

Ok, well I have a problem with your question. First of all, American people (meaning people born in AMERICA the continent, mostly SPEAK spanish, only North America speaks English) If you meant American as in form the US, all of them do.

First is "Americans" and "Speak" now as Latin Hottie said In America(the continent) people speak more spanish than English in U.s people speak more english than spanish also some speak portuguese.

Americans don't speak "English" we speak "American English". There's a difference between American English and British English.
