As if they were clearing there throats to make way for the "obvious" dictum to follow. Like: "Hmmmmm- looks like someone needs to read their Bible."

Funny answers, and no I am not touchy and yes I have seen it a lot and even heard it at Borders Books. Borders Scenario: Christian: "Do you want to go to a really cool church?" Me: "leave me alone, I am enjoying myself, and many people find it rude to talk about religion in public." Christian "Hmmmmm- So I should just keep my mouth shut about Jesus' wonderful news....Hmmmmm- interesting."

Hmm... probably because a lot of Christians think us non-believers are childlike dopes, who need education, so patronization just naturally follows. Or if you mention the word "atheist" they look at you like you just said "I eat children for lunch three times a week." Then they start with the "Hmmm.." as you mentioned.

Did anyone more obviously set themselves up for loads of answers consisting of just "Hmmmmm-" ?

My answer is, I haven't ever seen this, so it's hardly endemic. Any judgment is therefore irrelevant. Did it happen to you once and you were a bit touchy? I'd get over it.

Stalling for time in the hope they'll have something better than the obvious response.
Try using it in self defense.
"hmmmm, sounds like someone doesn't know the answer."
"Hmmmm, looks like you need some more paper towels"
"hmmm, yes, a tiger does seem to be chewing on your arm. Perhaps your faith isn't strong enough?"

As you say it's patronising-it's a way of saying I know better than you (because you're stupid).
