I would like to go (cheaply) by boat from China to Japan. I am in Dalian, an eastern port in China, but can easily get to Shanghai.
Any recommendations / prices?

Wow!!, I loved Dalian, and I really wanted to leave there by boat, but I didn't, and ended up taking a crowded and long train trip.

Anyways, I believe you can take the ferry to Tanggu (the port of Tianjin) for about 130-260 Yuan. One boat a day. From there, a boat leaves every Monday at 11am for Kobe (not sure where exactly that is in Japan) and it that costs about 1600Yuan plus, and takes 48 hours!!

From Dalian, the boat leaves for Shanghai every 4 days starting from the 6th of the month, and costs about 160-460 depending on class. That trip is about 37 hours. From Shanghai there is a boat that leaves every tuesday at noon to Osaka for 1600yuan to 10,000 plus. Depends on what class you travel. Takes about 47 hours. There is also another boat on Saturdays at 1pm that goes to Yokohama or Osaka, which alternates each week. This one is a Shanghai company, the previous boat, a Japanese company.

I got all this from my Lonely planet guide book, and it has all the phone numbers and addresses of terminals and ticket offices, so drop me an email if you need anything else.

Hope this helps.
