depends on the prison.
there are some programs that are medium security prisons that look more like daycares and the mom, as soon as she gives brith, are allowed to keep the baby with her and continue the program. this is for moms that have committed drug offenses or "minor" crimes like theft etc...
they go through rehab and career guidance. they have counseling and therapy.
now, if mom already had the baby and then went to prison, then she needs to find someone to take care of it...like dad or grandparents.
only some prisons are like this. many other prisons mom givesd birth and then 2-3 days later, baby is handed off to someone else for care. either dad, grandparents, family or given to the state.
take care.
P.S. this is from the US standard...not UK.
UK is a little different and i think moms and babies born in prison is more accepted....i found stuff when is searched "babies in prison" in google.

I am sorry that I cannot answer this since I have never been in prison but, you can find out by talking to the prison itself. I have heard or women being able to keep their babies in with them depending on the prison and the crime the mother had committed. Some of them allow the baby to stay in with them for the first 6 months to one year. Anyway, that isn't a safe place for a baby to be. I know that the mom would want that bonding time but isn't the best for baby.

Rare prisons will allow a child to be born in and live until age 1. This is VERY rare and they almost never allow a child born outside of the jail come in to live.

i think babies would have to go to youth detention centres rather than prison.
