A bit over 3000 in about 4 years.

By weight of comparison, here are some other numbers about American casualties in other conflicts.

Union troop deaths in the US Civil War due to combat - 110,000
Union troop deaths due to other than combat causes - 260,000

US troop losses in World War One - 116,00

US troop losses in World War Two total - 407,000

Allied losses at Guadalcanal - 7100
US troops losses during Operation Overlord, the D-Day invasion - 29,000
US losses at the 4 day offensive to take Tarawa - 1001
US losses at Iwo Jima - 6,140
US losses at Okinawa - 12,513 killed or missing and presumed dead

I am not going to say that the people who have died in Iraq are specks on the overall history of the US military, as that is very simply not true. What I will say is that in the cause of freedom, this nation has been lucky that the line of dead guarding our gates of freedom is much shorter than many other wars.

According to the pentagon declarations the total so far is 3098.There are civilian killed in Iraq also but no one declare how many.On other hand there are different sites who is saying the number is much more than pentagon, and it is about 12000 died

Just about over 3,000.
It would be hard for the Pentagon to lie about the "real numbers" because pretty much anyone could find out if they are lying about it.

Eve, Civilian deaths are far higher than your estimation. According to the medical journal the Lancet, the actual number of civiian deaths is 750,000 and that was last year!.

When you also count the numer of walking dead i.e. the veterans of Iraq who are too battle scarred, too damaged emotionally and mentally to ever function again into society. My sister feeds them daily at our local Salvation Army where she volunteers. They arrive hungry and homeless and lost. Sadly this govt. discards them on the scrap heap of life after they have outlived their use. Even worse they have never once issued an apology to them or the families of the 3,020 brave soldiers who have given their lives needlessly in a war based on lies.

the official number of u.s. casualties of 3000+ does't take into account the number of u.s. civilians, such as contract workers and aid personnell--but i would expect the number to be much higher--this is a good question that deserves some in depth research--good luck

Somewhat over 3,000 military, however, these records do not record the number of private contractors and security firm personnel who have also been killed.
