Okay first off....It may have been cheaper to have paid someone to do this as it looks like you have spent a lot on colors that are not working. Now...it also sounds like you have fried your hair! BEFORE you even attempt to dye your hair please try and cut off as much as the dead as you can. When you continue to put chemicals on top of over-processed hair you are not going to go anywhere but bald! Once you trim off as much as you can handle then start with a few hair treatments. When you get your hair in shape again to handle more color your going to have to bleach that hair out (this alone is going to be hard on your hair) and THEN you can put your red color on that you want.
Lighter color cannot be applied over darker color. It won't lift it and will not take. Anytime you are trying to change your hair color more than 3 shades a professional should actually be the one to help you get this achieved. Yes it may be more but its going to come out the way its suppose to. You cannot just simply pick up a box of color that looks good on the picture. Your hair is just not going to cooperate at all this way :) You just cannot dye black a lighter color as it HAS to be stripped first (bleached) - its the only way but I am afraid you may have over-processed your hair and bleaching by yourself is going to cause more damage and you won't have any hair left to comb

I think it might be a good idea to invest in a trip to the hairdresser. Are there any training colleges near you that would be reasonably inexpensive and yet do a good job? You should get the colour taken out.
Your hair could probably do with a 'rest'.
If you can't afford to pay a hairdresser, then do persevere with growing your hair colour out. When you think of all the £6's for the hair dyes and you're not getting the desired results, it's not really worth it.
I dyed my blonde hair black when I was about 16. I really liked it, but when the roots showed it looked so horrible. I tried dying over the top to get the colour back up but it was a disaster. My own colour went really blonde, and the black went ginger! I waited till the roots were about 1" long and had it cut to the roots. It was very short but looked so much better.
Good luck.

the only way to get the black out is to let it grow and cut regularly because the red will never come through with black there, also you say you've been colouring your hair since you were 13 which must be pretty hard on it and will probably need a break from all of the colour processing, because you have coloured your hair so much by the sounds of it and it is the darkest it can go this colour cannot be lifted by bleach or anything as severe breakage and possibly a chemical reaction might occur such as burning your scalp so just in-case you think that is a option "don't do it".if you proceed to grow your hair out to it's natural colour i would suggest using a penetrating conditioner to try and repair the damage caused by the colours in preparation for the next and maybe use a semi-permanent colour or quazi in place of a permanent.hope iv bin of some help sorry about the long msg good luck.

To really get your hair colour changed to red is not going to be easy since you have dark hair. The process for dark hair is normally to bleach it first ( strip the natural colour off ) and then apply the new red hair colour.
Personally , I would use the help of a professional to get this job done properly.
Save for a few months(£6 each time ) and then visit a reputable hair dresser and you will really be happy with the outcome.
You have tried for three years with no success , now use help from the professionals.

OK your problem is that you still have the black in your hair so you will need to strip it, by either using a color remover about $13 or a bleach about $10 at the drug store and that would be the only way to get it to turn red all over and since you said your hair was fried you need to buy a leave in conditioner and use that afterwards every day for at least a week, and to get the color to last longer what you need to do is wash your hair one a week no more because the shampoo will strip your hair and fade you color, the best of luck to you :)

Sounds like you're going to have to bleach all the colour out of it first if you want the red dye to take. You pretty much CANNOT dye on top of black hair. The only problem is if you bleach black hair, it will go ginger (washed out ginger - not very nice). My friend is slowly bleaching the black out of her hair so she can go back to being red, but it's taking a long time and she has to get it professinally done. Here's your options:
Dye all your hair black if you want one colour.
Grow the black out
Bleach the black and have ginger hair (which will also look uneven cos the roots aren't the same colour, and will destroy your hair even more)
Cut your hair short and funky and get it dyed professionally. You could get a funky uneven fringe cut in and lots of choppy short layers.
Shave it into a long Mohawk - you can get really nice girl mohawks where the hair isn't always spiked up, but put to the side with cool clips and clasps.
But do something - messed up dye jobs look AWFUL (I know, I've had one before!) but believe me - that black will not be dyed upon!
Good luck

I am a stylist, and the rule is....Color does not lift color. This means that.... unfortunately, you cannot lighten previously colored hair with another box. You are looking at corrective color at this point, which would need to be done at a salon. You need the black chemically removed, neutralized, filled, and re colored. If this is too much, the only thing you can do is wait it out..... This explains to your why only your roots take... they are the only natural part of your hair. Wish I could tell you a quick fix, but there is none without going to a salon. Stop putting more color over previous color as it will not do a thing except for more damage. Good luck

Right, to get dark hair red, especially if it has got old colour on it, hair needs to be bleached out. Which is best done at a hairdressers. Mixing a tint with a tint won't make a new colour, it will just make it dark brown. Thats why your roots are lifting to a red colour, and the rest of your hair is not. :-D

You could bleach your hair and strip the dark out than add the color you want. However this can really damage your hair or make it a funky color. Best bet since going to the salon is out, is to just let it grow out enough to where you can cut the old color out, or let it grow out all the way. It will take a while depending on how fast your hair grows. Best of luck. Also, if you choose to let it grow out, try styling it in different styles that won't show the different colors as much. Try braids or buns.

You will have to lift your hair with a bleaching product from a hairdressing suppliers. stop applying the reds until you do because your just building up the colour on the ends. apply the bleach to the mid-lengths and ends first when you notice it has lifted to a light brown/ dark blond or even a dark yellow apply it onto your roots. try not to apply it onto the root tip as it can lead to hair loss. if you decide to keep the red in the future just top up your roots and not your whole hair as it will just build up again.
