what you serve to accompany the soup would depend on the soup you are serving. if you are serving a cream based soup , such as a chowder, it is very filling and i would serve either bread sticks or a home made cheese biscuit with it. if you serve a a soup like an onion soup, a small garden salad would work with that if you go with a basic tomato soup or potato soup some thing along that line , i would serve a sandwich with those, i think the more complex the soup is the less you have to serve with it, for the least complex , such as a broth i would serve a small garden salad a half a sandwich. these are just suggestions when using the soup as a main course, if you use it as an appetizer or a first course then that changes every thing. i would have to know what the main course would be to help you out there. o

Depends on the soup: for French onion, I like a slice of day old French bread, a slice of Gruyere cheese, and melt all of that under the broiler. For minestrone, I add Parmesan and croutons. For green pea, I toss in some diced, cold ham. wonderful! Try mixing one can of condensed split pea and one can tomato, then add two cans water to make a mock turtle soup. Or, mix black bean and tomato, add a drop of sherry, and serve with seasoned crackers. A dollop of sour cream and some caviar is also a nice topping. Get creative, have fun! After all, if you don't like what you created, toss it and try again - it's only a can of soup!

I like cheese toasts. Toast one side of a thick slice of French bread in the broiler. Turn it over, spread with garlic butter, top with Parmesan, Romano, and asiago, and a sprinkle of dried oregano and pop back under the broiler until done.

The best part is that it goes with light soups and heartier ones.
