The three types of Scottish bank note (Clydesdale, Royal Bank and RB of S) can be spent in England just like the Bank of England notes.
However, in the past Scottish notes were easier to forge and for several years a lot of Scottish notes in circulation were forgeries. The result was that a lot of places became reluctant to accept them and to this day still are.
At the end of the day a shopkeeper can refuse any currency (he's not obliged to sell anything if he doesn't want to).
A bank will exchange it for English currency or you can do what I do which is to fill up with petrol and tell the cashier I don't have anything else.

Despite us all supposedly being one country and the fact that Scottish shops always accept English notes, you might have problems depending on the shop and the discretion of the person serving you. I've found that the majority of bigger nationwide stores (like Tescos, Next, Virgin, etc) will accept Scottish notes but there are times when even they say they can't.
If I were you, I'd just go to the bank before departing for England and ask for money in English notes. It's a free service and will save you the hassle of worrying who will take your money.

Technically, yes, but some places might not accept it. Any bank or Post Office will change it to Sterling for no fee.

its not legal tender (like Bank of England notes technically aren't in Scotland) but large shops will but some smaller shops like newagents probably won't

most places probably wouldnt accept it, it is only play money to keep the scottish happy, nowhere outside actually recognise it as currency, if you can fool a bank worker into believing it is real money, you should change it into sterling, if not just trade it for some magic beans

Yes, most places will accept it, as the bank they pay it into will also accept it.
