I'm a 16 year old guy .. I wouldnt say I have serious acne, but i definately always have 3 - 5 pimples on my face. Also, my nose is very prone to blackheads. I have tried heaps of methods like steaming, etc. and many products and scrubs, etc.
What's the best way to clear my skin? What's the best product? Do I need a product? Please help.

I tried everything and the only thing that has worked consistantly for me is Proactiv. It is expensive and you need to use all 3 steps religously! Plus, doesnt work overnight *I had about 10-20 pimples at a time* You will notice after a week your face clearing up and after a month no more pimples. This is b/c pimples start before you can see them and nothing is going to work over night. As far as the blackheads are concerned the cleanser has these little bead things in it that really cleans them out. I normally use a b'ore strip about once a week to get the really stubborn ones. I have been doing this about 6 months and I havent had a single pimple for 5 months.

Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.

In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.

Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.

In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.

If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

Since you don't have a seriously bad case of acne, I recommend Dan Kern's regimen, available here: http://acne.org/ It's simple and affordable (uses over-the-counter products) and simple (clogging your skin with too much can irritate it). In addition to the regimen, once a week you can try a mask, like Queen Helene's Mint Julep Mask (available at most drugstores) to give your skin a deep cleaning and get rid of the blackheads. There's no one miracle product for everyone, but regular habits calms and trains your skin.
Also, if you touch your face a lot (many do subconsciously; touching your skin can clog a pore which will result in a pimple), become aware of that and avoid doing that. Changing your pillowcase everyday might also help (pillowcases collect dead skin cells, and pressing your skin against dead skin cells might clog a pore).

Best thing for teenage acne, as you describe, is to take an antibiotic long-term. Doxycycline worked great for my son. He took it for 2 years (16-18) and after 3 weeks on it, he pretty much never had a pimple---maybe one a year. need a doctor's prescription, and it may cuase stomach upset if taken on an empty stomach. Tetracycline works well too, but may have more side effects.
