Some folks who study this type of stuff say that the models suggest that the human population has long exceeded the Earth's ability to support it. Us lay-folks should understand this, if nothing else, there is a limited amount of resources including living space, space to grow food, fresh water, and even thinking a bit out of the globe for a second, the amount of energy the Earth receives from the Sun.
China has already seen the effects of overpopulating its land with 80% of its freshwater streams dead from pollution or dried up from taking water for growing its food. Soon China will serve as a model for what the rest of what the world will experience if we do not start making a conscientious effort to control our numbers, i.e., one or two children per family. Technology will buy us time, extending our ability to continue to grow, but such endeavors will lead to irreversible damage to life-support-system-Earth. If you come to realize what many ignore, resources ARE limited, then this scenario will start to sound more like fact than fiction, challenge your ideas of faith toward reality, etc...

joining rivers through canel is one of the solution . India is working in this direction to reduce water shortage and flood .
