The maximum fine is $20 for a first offense, and I think every court charges the maximum. With penalty assessments, this will wind up being about $65. Second and subsequent offenses are $50 ($160). Veh. Code sec. 27315.

I assume that by "going on your record" you are asking whether this will be a point against your license. The answer to that (boy, do I hate to disagree with mikeysco) is no. Violations of VC 27315 do NOT add a point. Veh. Code section 12810.2.

Holy crap you guys get off cheap. I got a ticket 20 years ago for a seat belt violation and it was $150 for first offence--and $300 for a second, suspension of licence after that.

Average fine is around $25 for the first offense, and more after successive offenses.
