Get yourself a copy of a short book by Tom Wolfe called 'The Painted Word' and read it. You can do so in several hours.

It basically tells the story of how a few critics, mainly Clement Greenberg, Harold Rosenberg and Leo Steinberg, emerged to become the power behind modern art to the point where they dictated and decided what the public should like and not like, should consider great art or just crap and which artists should be championed or ignored.

It's really sadly spooky when you think about it. That a few New York pseudo intellectuals wielded enough power at one time to convince the world that people like Edward Hopper were minor artists to be taken lightly while they heaped praise on artists who painted wax targets on canvas and wide-brushed running streams of flat paint on unprimed canvases.

greenberg the bible to most art historians, however his views are widely accepted within the infrastructure of art appreciation ,not to everbodys liking, mine included, not totaly relevant on all his thinking we have moved on apace, but still widely used as a framework for contexual studies. LF

Oh, my goodness. What a wonderfully loaded question! Whether you love him or hate him, he was definitely a force to be reckoned with, and one of the major players in art criticism. The best way to know his opinions is to immerse yourself in his writings. Check out "Avant-Garde and Kitch," and "Towards a Newer Laocoon."

And to maintain a little balance, why not check out Harold Rosenberg's views?
