Why do u want to know? It's more respectful to your pet to bury him as soon as possible.
But since you asked you should atleast bury him within 48hrs - before the animal starts to swell and pop.
The hotter the area the pet is in the faster it will begin to decay, smell, and get more gross.
If you want to keep it around for a little longer instead of burying it you can wrap it up in plastic/ziploc bag and stick in a freezer. The freezer temporarily stops the decaying process. This method works pretty well if you have to wait a couple days before you can get it autopsied. But you probally not going to have him autopsied.

I once knew someone who put a guinea pig in a deep freezer for like 4 months till the ground thawed and she could bury it. I just jumped at the opportunity to share that story didn't I. Really something was wrong with her don't wait that long.

How ever long it takes before it dies?

Once the pet is dead, and you are absolutely sure of it, you could bury it as soon as you want. no reason to keep a dead cat lying around the house.

As a tip, though, don't just put him/her in a shoe box and dig a hole deep enough that you can't see the box. Put the body in a plastic bag *it'll contain the smell* and dig a hole 3feet plus how ever thick the coffin is. If ou don't, you'll have stray animals trying to dig it up.

Im not really sure about this, i would say bury immediatly if possible, but if you truley wanna wait, i say wrap the pet up, and do NOT wait no longer than 2 days.

Rigor mortis is only a temporary state so within 36 hours it will go all soft again. But I do suggest that you keep it in the fridge or it will decompose fairly fast and stink like hell.

an hour or so, the carcass will stink and all the maggots will eat it if you leave it too long.
Sorry to hear the death of a pet.x
