Well, if you are undecided...do me and other Military Families/Members and DO NOT JOIN! For the fact that people who are not 100+% sure they want to Join do not make good Soldiers/Sailors/Leathernecks/Fly-boys....

You have to consider your interests first. It's not just simply ticking which is which. If you believe that you can handle the discipline and stress of a military life and being bossed all the time during training, then by all means, go for it. If you are one who likes analyzing things and getting things done under a roof, then choose a deskwork.
At this time, it would probably better if you talk to people who are in the military and who are doing deskwork to help you decide.

The army or any of the services is a great way to get paid, become independant, and get trained for a future job. There are a lot of military jobs that are "deskwork" jobs. I have one now. As far as getting deployed, at 18 I would think you would want to do that to support the govt of this great country whether you agree with the war or not.
As far as the good "dr" 21,000 troops are not going to Iraq to die. They are going over to protect the interests of the US and try and make some sense out of the mess that is the middle east.
If you can't decide, the Reserves may be the ticket. You can get a regular job, and still get money for schooling.

Do both.
There are TONS of jobs in the military that are little more than deskwork. However, some of those jobs are very exciting. Take intelligence.
I got the chance to work in an intelligence squadron in Korea for a little more than a year. It was a huge stretch from my normal work as an electronic warfare tech on flightline aircraft, but for some reason, working that job was in my field. I had a chair, I had a very nice Silicon Graphics computer, and I kept the data link up between the airborne U-2 spy plane and the ground system that intel analyists worked. Most of the work was boring, but it was punctuated by times of huge excitement, most of which I cannot talk about.
If you have a clean background, go for intel. Hands down, the most exciting desk job you will even have.

Deskwork!
Do you watch the news? There are 21,000 more troops being sent to that Iraqi hell hole to die! Who do you think will be going over there??? It doesn't matter which branch you join either!
There are thousands of military members who separate every year when thier contract expires (As long as they are not involuntarily extended aka forced to serve against thier will) "Stop Loss" withstanding. These people need to be replaced with fresh warm bodies.
If you've got a job that pays the same than stay there......at least you don't have to risk your life or limbs to pickup a pay check. By the way...how many of those over 3,000 dead do you think signed up to get all that advertised college money?? Doesn't look like they will be going to college does it!!!!
Now not everybody gets deployed, but the shere fact of being in the Armed Forces makes you eligible to be put in a position to be killed by military operations. you don't have to be on the front lines or belong to a combat group.
Entry into the US Armed Forces in this day and age is not to be taken lightly. Ops tempo is up and the size of the military is decreasing which translates to more work and hardship for those who join. The mission of the military never decreases but the personnel does. Its called Do More With Less.
The military will give you a temporary economic boost but in the long run you will come out behind. There is nothing you can't do in the military to increase your economic future than you can already do as a civilian. The difference is that you have the opportunity to advance in a company but you'll be starting from scratch after you finish a 4 year enlistment.

is Iraq or Afghanistan or Somalia or any other future conflict 10km away from your house? I am active duty and like the person before me noted, people who are unsre about whether or not they want to be in the military do not make good Soldiers. Make a decision and stick with it. If you decide to join the military, give it your all and don't regret it. By regretting it, it will make your tour of duty that much longer. Good luck in whatever you do. What's my new gay slogan? oh yeah "Army Strong"
