Giving to the church (Tithe) is not specifically about money the idea of giving money to the church is there as an opportunity for church goers to give their ten percent to christ. this money is then used by the church. however Tithe is about giving back to god and you are not required to give. Acts of charity and service to others is also counted as Christ said that giving to his people is like giving to him.
I agree with you though, churches should be giving to poor people in the surrounding community. A lot of churches these days are corrupted and this gives christianity a bad name however churches are there to plant faith in those who want a relationship with god and it is those people who go out and serve and give their Tithe practicaly and help those in the community and in third world countries who are in need.

There was a journalist who recently conducted an expirament.

He asked the Salvation Army if he could monitor their donations in the cities of St. Louis, MO and San Francisco.

San Francisco is a far richer city (property values and standard of living is one of the highest in the country), yet the people in St. Louis gave about 10 times more.

The journalist's conclusion was that religious conservatives are far more generous than rich liberals. This fits with liberal ethics in that liberals expect the government to take care of the poor so that individuals don't have to bother.

My conclusion is that Christians give to the church AND to charity. Take your own poll of people you know and see if this is true.

A church should have a box in the very back of the room. My work has a notice of other stores who have come into bad times. We have a choice to contribute in secrecy. The person recieving and donating deserves tact. This goes for religion as well. Your question was specific to religion. I'm sorry, I don't know why your church needs your money.

many Diocese in North America are bankrupt due to the cost of all the pedophile priest law suits. The legal fees plus the compensation they had to pay to the thousands of victims that finally came forward represents a large amount of money.
That's why donations are so important. The money is really needed to get the church out of bankruptcy.

Like all cults, religion is based upon gaining followers to further a cause by any means. the aim of the game is to convince them it is a persons duty to give money, spread the word, or in many cases die for their god
