I have found jams & fruit home canned in mason jars as old as 10 - 15 years, in basement. Is it still any good. p.s. I've heard in bomb shelters canned food can last for up to 30 years. Anyone Know?

I don't have a straight answer for your question (which by-the-way is a VERY good question), but I know if you contact your local 4-H club, they should be able to answer your question.

As for what you heard about the bomb shelter info, it is true. But again, it's only PROPERLY canned foods, which reside in a tin can, rather a home-packaged glass jar.

In case you don't have a local 4-H club, you can contact them Nationally at:
1.202.720.2908 - It's a Washington DC number.
Or you can e-mail them at:
4hhq@csrees.usda.gov

(Hope what they say about how some foods are better with age, I sure hope your canned foods apply!! YUM-YUM!)
