I didn`t have bloating or constipation problems after giving up smoking but then i didn`t chew any gum if you are
It fills you up with air so that it will cause bloating

No, I haven't experienced the bloating and constipation that you seem to be suffering from. I, however, did not eat junk food which is hard to digest and can cause your stomach to expand especially when you're not able to relieve yourself. You may try going to the bathroom at the local gas station where the stench may cause your stomach to be so upset that it will loosen the waste materials into diarrhea which can more easily be discharged. If that works, continue using the bathroom facilities at your local gas station until you feel well enough to resume business at home. Oh, and don't forget to wash your hands after you leave the gas station.

I quit smoking after 25 years of smoking non-filter camels. The only symptom I had was fresher breath. Perhaps you should seek a physicians advice? Something else might be going on. I don't believe the "body getting rid of toxins" for a minute. I'd consider getting a physical.

the first thing i thought of when i read your question was to ask if when you stopped smoking did you start nibbling food or even chew gum more than usual (gum can cause some people to bloat) if the answer is yes try to eat abit more healthier veg etc instead of sweets ,crisps ive been there and done it and put on weight.

To Nutty Girl: I effin love the way people say "crisps" Its so cool.

And yeah, its prob. from eating too much after you quit. You suddenly increased the ammount of food your body takes in and it has caused you to bloat. Simple. Just eat healthier and it wont do that, oh just dont eat green things too fast or you will bloat even worse. ;)

good luck

I read somewhere that smoking can have a laxative effect. If your body has become dependent on cigarettes and your body has become dependent on the laxative effect of cigarettes it may take a few weeks for your body to adjust to not having that.

I would not suggest you take laxatives because it can store up problems for later in life. For example if your body becomes dependent on laxatives now, if you ever do actually require them you may have to get enemas - yuck! Laxatives make the bowel lazy.

I would suggest that you increase your fibre intake. This should gently encourage your bowel to work normally again. It may take time (days-weeks) however, be patient. Also taking the 'good' bacteria in yoghurt may be helpful. Drinks like Yakult, the rest aren't very good as they don't reach the large bowel, the other one that is good is Multibionta multi vits (should not be taken if contemplating pregnancy, check with your GP regarding Vit A content) - a study showed this research, I forget which one.

Increase your fibre intake by eating more fruit and vegetables. 5 a day is recommended but if you are serious about wanting to move your bowels you should probably aim for more. I would also suggest increasing your intake of 'bulk' fibres as these bulk out your stools and allow your gut to have something to 'hold on to' as it moves your stool down for evacuation. Bulk fibres are in wheat or bran type foods e.g. branflakes.

Here is a meal plan to increase your fibre intake:

Breakfast: bowl of branflakes with s.skim milk and 2-3 chopped strawberries, 4-5 raspberries, a handful of blueberries. A probiotic yoghurt drink/probiotic vitamin

Snack mid am: fruit/raw veg sticks

Lunch: granary bread s/w, including some salad type filling, a probiotic yoghurt and two pieces of fruit or berries added to yoghurt.

Snack mid pm: fruit/raw veg sticks

Evening meal: wholemeal pasta with tomato and veg (e.g. add aubergine, courgette and mushrooms) and a high protein food e.g. meat/fish/quorn/tofu
ice cream with berry fruits

Supper: fruit smoothie with probiotic yoghurt.

Just ideas but also very high in antioxidants which is important if you have stopped smoking as you are at a higher risk of cancer as a smoker and antioxidants can help prevent damage to cells which can lead to cancer.

Also a lack of physical activity can add to problems with ease of bowel motions.

Try eating right. Quitting smoking often makes people pig out on everything. So eat right, and get plenty of fluid and fiber in your diet. You need fiber to make it all go through and come out the back end right.

This is just one of the effects of stopping smoking. Don't consider starting again whatever you do. Everything will settle down to normal shortly.
