I think at the moment you are right, but it won't last, perhaps another 20 years maybe a little more I give the USA to be at the top of the tree.
As an Englishman I do understand your frustration at constantly being criticised and Europe has a lot to be thankful for to the USA (whether some people like it or not).
I do think however (no matter how much you may or not support them) your present administration (Bush & co) have done a lot of damage to the USA on the world stage. They have acted like bullies ignoring what other people say. They threw the UN to one side because they believed they were an irrelevance and obstructed what the Bush Adminstration wanted to do (namely invade Iraq). A couple or years later they were asking th UN to assist in Iraq. Unfortunately you might not like the UN and you might percieve it as weak, but it's the only thing the world has and shouldn't of been treated with such contempt by your government. In the end it was the USA Government which looked stupid. I can't believe you voted him in for a second time after all the lies that were told. Unfortunately we voted Blair the lair in again, but I'm at a loss as to why.
There will also be a certain amount of jealousy at the power of the USA

I'm not European but I'll tell you the truth,
USA is deliberately brought up as a police station, to facilitate UK to rule the world behind the screen.
You are believing what is shown in the media, but reality is not like that.
UK can any time bring out the air from the balloon of USA, like they did in the case of USSR.
Grow up baby!

We don't hate you, but I can definitely feel contempt and pity stir my soul if I read questions like yours.
The US is the Western country where workers have the longest hours and the shortest holidays, school leavers the highest percentage of illiteracy and innumeracy, public transport is a foreign concept in most parts, and hardly anybody has registered yet that the oil will run out, where crime is rampant and the possibility to dy by gunshot wounds nearly higher than dying through cancer....
So you are proud of the fact that your military can kill millions of people for the gain of a few?
Rave on.

One of the reasons the U.S is on top is because they are dependent on arms sales, and the last thing a man who sells arms wants is an outbreak of peace!
That is their weakness!!!
In world war II they made money by funding both sides, wall street actually bank rolled the third Reich while supplying the UK on a loan lease agreement... Effectively making us the 51st state.
That's why we don't have sovereignty over any land that their air bases use here.. They can bomb anyone from here and we don't get a say.

No country lasts long without a stable economy. The last head of the Fed said our debt was out of control and would lead us to grave danger unless we dealt with it. Instead, Bush and the Republicans have made it nosedive more. http://www.uuforum.org/deficit.htm
All this debt is borrowed from countries like China and Saudi Arabia to name just two of our lenders. Our war in Iraq has stretched our military to the breaking point, and it is costing http://nationalpriorities.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=182 a staggering abount with no end in sight. Many believe we are on the brink of not being able to ever do this again. The position you are so proud of may rapidly become a thing of the past.

The united States hardly rules the World. If we did then we wouldn't be such cowards when we consistantly are punked by China. We are afraid to enforce any policy we hold other nations to against China. If we did then we would have Smacked down North Korea, but north Korea is supported by China so we never kicked thier butt or destroyed thier nuke plants. North Korea is clearly a far greater threat to the US than Iraq ever was but we do nothing.
Europeans do not hate Americans! They dispise US policies and our pompus President. So do many Americans for that matter!!!
The humongous trade deficit of the United States should open your eyes to the FACT that because we've outsourced nearly all our manufacturing to other nations we are now dependant on those nations. Also, the United States Military is also dependant on other nations to provide us key parts to our weaponry (70% of the new F-22 Fighter is built outside the USA)
These outside nations can now bring America to its knees merely by refusing to ship us goods such as iPods, TVs, Washing machines, and yes even cars etc!! Oh yeah...they can also tell us to pay up on all the money we owe them...not visa versa.

Americans think that they rule the world; however, the rest of the world think that they are are full of ****. The American Nation is the proudest I have ever visited in my life, but they are also the dumbest. I spent 4 months in the states and meet some of the dumdest poeple in the world. I meet poeple that though that the Australia flag was the Canadian. I meet WW2 Vets that serve in the in Sth East Asia and didn't know where Australia was on the Map. If America rules the earth god help us all.

Japan rivals our generosity (they have been noted by our State Department as being the most generous nation on the planet).
England, Canada and Australia rival us in values and traditions. They are the best friends we're likely to have for a long time.
IMHO, they're welcome to rule the world with us. I don't mind a bit.

No sane individual will argue that militarily the US is years ahead of everyone else. Sadly, we do not know how to use it. Keep in mind that the 9/11 terrorists used cutting blades! and did not need nuclear weapons to create havoc.
The Europeans do NOT hate us. That is your wrong assumption. I travel to Europe every year and stay for extended periods. They do NOT hate the American people, but they do have little but contempt for the Bush Administration and did not agree on the Iraq invasion. And they were right. We should have listened to them.
