Is your version actually a genuine version of windows though? If you have had the same one for a long time and it has just recently started happening maybe you should try a system restore to a time when it was not there. Could be a little virus or something, and if you do have a genuine windows version, it should not be saying this, so you may need to contact Microsoft about this problem. Or research this at www.microsoft.com

It is only an indication that you are using a pirated copy of Win Xp :-) And advise you to purchase a legal license, in order for the star sign to go away.

You need to purchase a genuine copy of XP.

Without a genuine copy, you can't get any Windows Updates and Microsoft can detect all illegal copies and will eventually shut down the OS

your windows code is a cracked version or one thats been used by mutiple computers... if your computer has the authentic windows code tag then just call windows and they will fix it. you will need to know the make and model of your computer and a brief decription on where it was purchesed. actully the windows will run just fine and youll still get critical updates so really theres no problem with it. just shut off updates to stop the torment of it popping up to tell you your a thief.
