Probably because when we drink from a bottle and we dont finish it we screw on the top so when we finish it we just screw the bottle cap because we are used to it.

Because they are never totally empty of liquid, so we put the lids back on to stop it getting out and making things wet. You are supposed to unscrew the lid when recycling the bottle, so I can't see this being a big problem for the enviroment :-/

I always put the lids back on empty bottles as i squash the o2 out of them, therefor taking up less room..

It is due to our habit as well as it becomes annoying to look for the little lid when it's lost! We also do it because they belong together!

because it would be pointless to hold the bottle and top in two hands. By screwing the cap on, you cut the work by 50%!

You say ALWAYS - not so. We can only recycle the bottles, not the tops, so the bottle goes in the recycling bin and the top goes in the general rubbish.
