It is different according to your relationship. Within families, you can go up to a person and touch them, but after wards you both maintain a distance of about 20 inches. And, you couldn't run a knife between a couple in love on some occasions. I think 24 inches is comfortable for most people. Too close with strangers would be less than that amount, what the Seinfeld sit-com dubbed "a close-talker."

Good question about personal space. Usually the 'personal space' is 3 feet. Or just streach out your arm and when you extend your fingers that is as far as you should go. Because the point of your fingers end where their nose begins.

Different cultures have different expectations about this. It depends on the gender and relationship between the two participants. I'd say observe people around the area where you live and you'll have your answer.
