It's a personal choice. If you think you'll be more at peace donating, then by all means, go for it.

I hate the process, and the donor services representatives. I've dealt with them a million times, and their callousness never fails to appall me. I wouldn't donate based on my experiences. I don't want to put my family through that pain of dealing with such cold-hearted people.

This decision, in my opinion, is a highly personal one to make. All I can do is tell you that I have had two separate organs from two donors. These people saved my life.

Take into consideration what organs you would be willing to donate should your decision be in the affirmative. UNOS (people who keep track of organs...where they go...who gets them, etc.) will allow a person to donate: eyes (actually just the cornea. A whole eye is not able to be transplanted), heart, lungs, liver, intestines, pancreas, kidneys (two people get to live because of one person's donated organs) and skin...if I have forgotton anything I apologize. I do know the wait time for a kidney is about seven years and a person has to be pretty darn sick before they can be placed on the transplant list.

I only waited six months for James' kidney, and eight months for Jennifer's pancreas. My transplants were June and September of 2001.

But the decision is really up to you. Look at the scientific, logical and spiritual tug-of-war that is making this decision difficult. Talk to people. Go to a transplant ward of a nearby hospital and ask questions of the docs and nurses up there. They are very open to answering questions you might have. You could also contact UNOS. They are on the web and have a 1-800 number. I do not have it right in front of me but you can get it by dialing 1-800-555-1212. This is the information line for all of the 800 numbers in the country.

I wish you all the best with your decision. Either way, I applaud the fact that you are at least thinking about it.

I'm around,

Ebee

ABSOLUTELY ! ! !

Since I don't like any of the other options (burial, cremation, or entombment), and since my parts will no longer do me any good, it's wonderful to give others the 'gift of life' by using donated organs (after all, if a loved one was waiting for a new heart or kidney, wouldn't you be thankful if someone donated to them?)

Contact ANATOMY GIFTS REGISTRY (their motto "Leave an impression on Mankind") at:

You can have remains returned to your family, or choose the option of donating the entire body, with no remains.

Good luck in your decision. It is one I gladly have made.

I am a donor. When I die, I'd like to help others live.
