I got my tongue pierced about a day and a half ago.. I know it's probably going to stay swollen for up to a week, but the pain is so much worse than the swelling. My gums and especially my bottom teeth are so sore it gives me a killer headache. I've tried taking pain meds but they arent helping.. the pain under my tongue is getting to the point that I can't sleep or eat, is this really normal??

I don't really need opinions.. I don't care if you think they're tacky or whatever.. I'm just searching for answers from people who have had it done or know a lot about it..

I've been rinsing with an alcohol-free mouthwash and i havent been able to eat/drink anything but some ice cream and lots of cold water.. the pain is mostly bearable but I just wanted to know if it's normal for my teeth and gums to hurt so much..

for some this is normal but for others it means it is infected, i would go to the doctor if it stays that way much longer just to have it checked

Sound like you have reason to be concerned. Your jaw shouldn't hurt. How does the area look? How much Listerine have you been using? What kinds of things have you been eating?

If it is discolored it could be an infection. If you have been going overboard on the Listerine, you may have caused an imbalance in your mouth. If you have eaten salty or spicy foods you may have upset the healing process.
I would call a doctor, this may be normal given the conditions but it may not, better to be safe than sorry. I have several piercings and I don't mess with infections.

Your teeth and gums shouldn't hurt, not even as much as they do when you get a dental cleaning, your jaw isn't open that long for a tongue piercing. Try sorbet or sherbert rather than ice cream, the dairy may be hurting things.

Don't be nervous about going to a doctor, yes they may hassle you a bit for it but let the doc know that you want to know the facts about what is going on, and what you need to do, not what they want you to do.

Ok honestly im not going to lie.At fist you dont feel crap and you feel a slight pinch that doesnt hurt as much as bitin your tongue. So its all fine the first day until you wake up and you kinda want to eat but its swollen and it hurts. So you will have to eat soup unless you dont care and you dont care about the pain. So For the swelling a lot of ice cream and ice cubes help you a lot.it will go down in exactly 5-7 days. no more no less if you feel pain after a week chances are they messed up while piercing and they hit a vein or nerve.Go somewhere professional and buy sea salt water, ice cream, and instead of listerine use Cepacol.Good luck by the way. I have 3 on my tongue and this was from my experience and th ppl that i no

I've had mine done 2 times. It could be an infection. some people can handle having their tongue pierced and other peoples body reject it. If it is really bothersome take it out. I had pain with mine at first but i went out with friends after i had mine done and they usually say no drinking i did it swelled and hurt. I also had pain with mine til the swelling went down and the hole got stretched a little. The barbell might be too small and if its swollen alot it will cause pain

chew on ice and eat lots of popsicles.
it usually doesn't hurt this much, so to be safe, go to your piercer or doctor to get it checked out. it could be infected, so you might need to take it out or get antibiotics. if it's not infected and you just have a low pain tolerance, your doctor will probably be able to prescribe you some stronger painkillers.
if the jewellery isn't surgical steel, you could be having an allergic reaction. make sure you know for sure that it's actually surgical grade.
make sure you're cleaning it properly too!! i've found that h2ocean (sea salt spray) and emu oil work wonders on new piercings (you can find both in many tattoo and piercing studios or online).
hope it gets better soon!!

I got my tongue pierced about 6 mos ago and I remember it was the worst piercing I have. My tongue killed me. I was tempted a few times to take it out and forget it. I dont remember alot of pain, mine was really swollen and I couldnt talk or eat or smoke or anything for about 4 days. I used listerine mouth was like 5 times a day. Then I would graggle salt water. It works good luck. Stick through it you'll like it soon

I'm sure it's different for everyone. When I got mine done my tongue was swollen and a little sore for a few days but that was it. No severe pain or anything. If it's bearable I would wait a few days... It should get better soon. And keep rinsing your mouth out after you eat or smoke.
