I had not seen that until I read answers and questions from Muslims in YA. A couple wrote the whole phrase out , (rather than using the initials), which is how they say or pray it. (I assume this.)
The other answers tell you what it stands for and why it is used. I find that a lovely way to show respect.

You might be more familiar with someone saying, "Bless His/Her heart!" after relating a story about someone, or "May He/She rest in peace.", after speaking about someone who has died. A parallel practice, yes?

It's a short version of Peace Be Unto Him or Peace Be Upon Him. Muslims say it after every prophet. Muhammad (PBUH). Jesus (PBUH). Joshua (PBUH). Noah (PBUH). Abraham (PBUH). Solomon (PBUH). I hope this helps you. May God grant you success in your good ventures of the day :))

It is a blessing. It means "Peace Be Upon Him" (or Her, as the case may be).

This is an Arabic custom. The postscript is given after mentioning the name of a known prophet or saint, as a sign of respect.

Peace and Blessings be upon him. It's a salutation recognizing the sanctity of the person!?!?

PBUH means peace be upon him. Or, alternatively could mean praise. But colloquially, it is perceived (by me and laypersons) as PEACE, not praise.
