Medieval Jewish scholars put the date of creation at 3760 B.C.
Greek Orthodox theologians put creation as far back as 5508 B.C.
Archbishop James Usher (1580-1656) published "Annales veteris testamenti, a prima mundi origine deducti" ("Annals of the Old Testament, deduced from the first origins of the world"),and it's sequel "Annalium pars postierior" in 1654, which suggested that the Heaven and Earth were created approximately the 23rd of October, 4004 B.C.
There are many specific dates and lengths of time mentioned in the Old and New Testaments, that,if one has time and inclination, can be used to calculate the age of the Earth, or when the Flood happened, King David's first wife's birthday, etc.
Most modern Christians do not read the Bible literally in this way, but some do, and definitely there is a strong history of scholarship that tried to used the Old Testament to secure accurate, historical dates for the Creation.

The actual number (6,000) is not in the Bible. If it was, it would obviously say 4,000 (because the book is 2,000 years old).
The number 6,000 is arrived at by tracing back certain things we can date, such as the year of King David's reign (1,000 BCE something we know from archeaology), and then counting backwards along the "known" geneaologies in the Bible.
Yes, there are many people who actually believe this number to be accurate.

There are at least four different dates of creation calculated from Biblical sources, ostensibly on the same documents which are inerrant, according to fundamentalists. Jewish 3760 BC Hale 5411 BC Ussher 4004 BC Alexandrian 5503 BC The earliest and latest of these differ by 38% from their mean value. Talk about precision! From the Jewish or Ussher calculation, less the ages of the patriarchs from Adam to Noah in Genesis, the great flood occurred long after the big three pyramids at Giza were built. And the dates of the Giza pyramids can be determined from carbon dating of the boat found in front of the biggest one, (C14 the creationist's favorite whipping boy) and from Egyptian docmentary sources. Incredibly, these agree to within a few decades. That calculation you can do yourself.

Although some find it boring reading, there was a reason that God was so careful about recording the genealogies of man. The Bible lays out the lifetimes of every man starting with Adam through the book of Genesis. if your a fair mathematics student and can add then you can sum up the generations from Adam to Noah. Then from the flood to the birth of Christ. We know that his birth changed our entire time line b.c.(before Christ) and it has been approximately two thousand years since his birth(2007). Numbers are a very important thing to God and yes someday Science will look very foolish for trying to persuade us that the earth has been here for millions or billions of years. with recent technology , sciences archaic methods of dating are proving very inaccurate. The general consensus among bible scholars is that the earth was created six to ten thousand years ago

Only the stupid uneducated ones believe it.
No, it was not in the Bible until 1701. Bishop James Ussher used the bible to calculate the exact date as: Sunday 23 October 4004 BC.
Later, someone else decided that it was at 9:00 AM. (I don't know if he specified which time zone).
It is just made up and has no empirical basis. there is not a single shred of scientific evidence to support it. All scientific knowledge directly, overwhelmingly, and convincingly refutes it.

Some of them do, yeah.
I don't think it says that exact number in the Bible; someone a long time ago added up all the ages in the book and somehow came up with 6,000 as the age of the earth. I'm not sure what percentage of them actually agree with that estimate, but some of them definitely do.

A small percentage of Christians believe the earth is young.
Is it in the bible? If you add a lot of mental gymnastics and creative interpretation.
Is it a joke? No, but it's funny anyway.

The 6000 years is in referrence to the creation of man, not the creation of the earth. The earth is thousands and thousands of years older.
