Just tell her honestly, simply and clearly, TO HER FACE. Make sure she understands the whole situation, and don't hound her after she hears you. If she chooses not to listen, that is not your problem. She can always come back when she's ready and ask if she really wants to know what she didn't hear before.

There is no way to break up with your girlfriend. Even if she didn't like you, she will act as if she was emotionally attached to you just so you fell bad. So he was right, make her dump you.
